The Pacific Northwest is a treasure trove of iconic landmarks that resonate with a sense of mystery. As a photographer, I wanted to weave a spooky narrative into my work; I've discovered a unique way to transform these sites into enchanting, eerie scenes using the power of Photoshop. The software empowers me to adjust lighting, introduce supernatural elements, and craft a narrative that seamlessly blends the iconic with the otherworldly. These spooky scenes encourage viewers to experience these sites through a fresh, mystical lens.
In this blog, I'll take you through my experiences at Yaquina Head Lighthouse, the Peter Iredale shipwreck, and the Oysterville Church, Net shed on Columbia River, and Oceanview Abby in Warrenton, sharing how I've brought their mystique to life.
Each scene carries a unique story inspired by local lore and legends. These narratives pay homage to the rich cultural heritage of the Pacific Northwest and invite viewers to embark on a visual journey that transcends the ordinary.

The Peter Iredale, a shipwreck on the Oregon coast, is a haunting relic of maritime history. Capturing this iconic scene under the veil of night or amidst rolling fog, I re-envision the ship as the eerie stage for a ghostly tale, with phantom sailors navigating its rusted remains.

Oysterville Church: The quaint Oysterville Church in Washington State holds an air of old-world charm. Its timeworn architecture becomes the setting for a mysterious narrative. Combining its vintage appeal with digital sorcery, I create a scene that evokes whispers of spectral gatherings in the moonlight.
3. Yaquina Head Lighthouse stands majestically against the turbulent Pacific Ocean. The misty, foggy weather of the Oregon coast sets the perfect backdrop for my spooky transformation. By photographing it during gloomy days or at twilight, I create an atmosphere that's ideal for infusing a hint of magic and spookiness. Adding in a stranded mermaid and lightkeeper played well by my kids.
4. The Netshed on the Columbia River stands as a mysterious, weathered building with a storied past. I cast it as the stage for a ghostly fishing tale, where spectral fishermen mend invisible nets under the eerie glow of moonlight. Its timeworn structure lends itself perfectly to the spooky transformations I love to create.
5. The Oceanview Abbey at the cemetery exudes an air of somber enchantment. Under the pale moonlight, I imagine its ivy-covered walls housing ghostly residents who engage in a spectral congregation, adding a new layer of intrigue to this hauntingly beautiful site.
I hope you enjoyed this series.
Cheers!
Kathleen
